National Astronaut Day is celebrated annually in the United States on May 5. It honors astronauts and their contributions to space exploration.

The celebration began on May 5, 1961, as part of NASA's Project Mercury. This day marks the historic spaceflight of astronaut Alan Shepard. Also, on May 5 in the year 1479, the third Sikh Guru, Guru Amar Das, was born.
In addition, World Laughter Day is celebrated on May 5.
The celebration was started in 1998 by Dr. Madan Kataria to raise awareness about the therapeutic benefits of laughter.
